Animated Youngsters
Here they are!
Program: February – June 2015
Presentation: July – August 2015
MAMA proudly presents a new collective called the Animated Youngsters. After two 'Try Outs' in January, twelve enthusiastic and motivated young people have been selected to join the syllabus. In the coming months they will be immersed in the gaming world, under the guidance of two coaches: Luis Ramos (1984, Rotterdam) and Lesley Wijnands (1990, Woerden). A presentation of their journey and the achieved results will be shown at MAMA in the summer of 2015.
The learning program challenges them to deepen and expand their knowledge and views on gaming. The Animated Youngsters will follow workshops, make excursions to conferences and events, analyse games, and meet professionals from the gaming industry. By exploring the crossovers between art, science and the Internet, they come into contact with a broad spectrum of the gaming world. In this way, the collective develops a critical way of looking at gaming culture, and they are trained by the latest generation of gaming experts.

In the coming weeks, the Animated Youngsters will follow a programming workshop by Robert Karsdorp, teacher in Game Art & Development at the Graphic Lyceum Rotterdam, visit the exhibition New Horizons: de kunst achter games (the art behind games) at the Fries Museum, and attend a game design workshop by Jan-Maarten Nachtegeller from Gamious game studio. Other activities include a visit to TonTon Club XL, a weekend full of new-school arcade games; attending a workshop with glitch-artist Rosa Menkman; visiting the Born Digital exhibition at MOTI; and attending a workshop on cultural diversity within gaming.

Throughout the process the collective will be followed by filmmaker Marèl Jap-Sam (1989, Amstelveen) and cinematographer Esther Kool (1984, Rotterdam), who are making a documentary series focusing on the development of the group. The series will form the basis of Animated Youngsters Extended, a multimedia curriculum for secondary schools that launches in 2016.

Animated Youngsters is MAMA's second Rookies Junior project. Rookies Junior focuses on young people aged between 14 and 18 as producers of art. For this target group, creating for yourself is a strong and lasting way of identify with art and culture. The first edition of Rookies Junior was the All Girls Street Art Collective (2012-2013), from which the still active Onskruid collective emerged.
